Ocean's Thirteen

I went to see Ocean’s Thirteen on Monday, and it was great. A very entertaining heist movie - much better than the last one, maybe as good as the first (though I’d have to rewatch Eleven for a solid comparison).

"The alternative is a postmodern fantasy about on-the-ground tactics."

The Bourne movies?

"If you had an “Ocean’s Eleven” RPG, part of the game mechanic would be a “contingency” system - when the plan goes wrong, the players could put their heads together and spend “contingency” points to tell some sort of story about how they already had something in place to anticipate the complication."

Which would be a lot easier than actually trying to establish fall-back contingencies and cunning turnarounds. Cause, you know, trying to cover every base in a huge LARP with alternate scenarios and seeded contingencies and sekret plans gets stressful after a few years :P

The "not being entirely in on it" in Ocean's Eleven was what made it so great. It really did bring out genius in the characters. What bothered me so much about Twelve was that the only reason they ended up "winning" was because some random dude told them where the real target was. It felt cheap; there was no cleverness to their winning strategy.

While I felt that Thirteen was closer to Eleven, I never once felt like something went wrong. I enjoyed the movie, but I never doubted that things were going their way; I never felt drama.

Not being 'in on' the plan also means you can't critique it or find flaws in it. At least not until after ( ... )
