How did Blue October "sell out," exactly? I mean, yeah, they signed a deal with Universal, but they were re-signing with Universal, and this time, they were in a position to have more artistic freedom. Which they used to write sappy ballad-style stuff. More power to them. Just because they receive national attention, they've sold out?
Mostly I just can't stand phrases like "before they sold out."
I can see why you don't like it, but here's why I've used it. And I do admit, I myself have not seen them in concert, but I'm taking some of this from other formerly-hardcore Blue October fans. They haven't just gotten attention, they've changed themselves to get attention. They've changed their style, rock and otherwise, to be more mainstream. They aren't the underground, don't-care-if-we-make-it band they used to be. It'd be one thing if they made it as they were, but they didn't. So that's why I and many other fans say they've sold out.
