We've learned a lot from very simple 'for dummies' plumbing books. Its seems the most important thing to remember is gravity (and taking into consideration the direction water is trying to go).

Thanks! The problem is in getting to the pipes. It's a god-awful conglomeration of PVC, ABS, and cast iron held together with flex connectors buried under a layer of drywall that was installed over a layer of plaster. :(
I'm actually having a plumber look at it before I touch anything--my only task right now is opening it all up.
