There's a fundamental difference in Ianto's and Jack's outlooks on life that shows really clearly in the scene where they realise only one breath is left in the flask - Ianto is devastated that he only managed to save one, while Jack is ecstatic that they actually managed to save one. For Jack, it's a victory, for Ianto a failure.
I feel so bad for Ianto, but Jack's right - it wasn't his fault, he did all he could and succeeded in saving a child, and that's a good thing. I only hope Jack can make him believe that!
Jack's lived and lost a lot longer than Ianto has, while Ianto has lost a huge amount in a short time. He is probably still beating himself over Lisa and Canary Wharf, about being unable to save her.
I always felt that they could have added more about the day's effect on Ianto, since it started off with him wanting to share more of himself with the team. Thanks.
