90 minute sleep cycle

I came across the concept of  90 minute sleep cycle on LJ few years back. If I remember correctly, it was either bluesmoon 's post or comment somewhere.

Couple of weeks back I was talking to a friend on how I wake up fresh when I sleep for time periods which are multiple of 90 minutes. He tried the same formula and confirmed, it probably works true for him ( Read more... )

Since my own sleep has been disturbed (and pretty bad quality) for several years....I am interested in anything on the topic! :)

I always wondered if you had time to sleep with so much of activity around you :)

How very very interesting, and I have never heard of this before. I clicked your links, but I am not sure I understand. Jesse has had difficulty with sleep ever since he switched to working nights. It is a better job, but he has never been able to adjust to sleeping during the day. Or I should say that he sleeps, but he claims to never feel rested no matter how much sleep he gets.

So do you sleep for 3 hours and then a 90-minute nap like the guy that wrote that first article? How do you do it?

And help me out with the math. If Jesse goes to sleep each day at 10am, when should he wake up to feel rested?

The math is you time your sleep in multiples of 90 minutes, i.e from the time of going to sleep, try waking up either after 3, 4.5, 6, 7.5 or 9 hours. Ideally 6 hours should be good, however based on the available time whether it is less or more, one can try 4.5 or 9 hours also. According to them it is better than sleeping for 5, 7 or 8 hours.

May be with Jesse, you should try waking him up exactly after 6 hours. I hope it works for him around 6 hours +/- 15 mins. If 10 am, try waking him up around 4 pm. What time does he wake up generally ?

I usually sleep for 6 hours, but if I am sleeping a little late, I have trouble waking up before 6 hours, so I am planning to sleep only for 4.5 hours when I dont have 6 hours in my hand. It should help if their logic works.

I hope the logic works for Jesse and all of you too..

Well if your friend sleeps at 11:00 pm then 6:30 am will be 7.5 hours. If he sleeps earlier then you better wake him up earlier!!!
