Denial and not thinking could only last so long. Which explained why Isabel was standing outside the doorway trying to work up the courage to knock.

Someone was standing in the doorway. Jack knew they were there, but he finished the note he was writing before looking up.

He stilled when he saw who it was, then set his papers aside. Keeping his expression neutral, his voice calm, he said, "Isabel. What can I do for you?"

Still vaguely unsettled after Isabel's visit, Jack actually got up to answer the door. When he saw who it was, he reached out to pull him into a hug.

Jack held on for a minute, then let go, feeling foolish, but also much better. "Hi," he said, running a hand through his hair, looking a bit sheepish. "What brings you down here?"
