Good for you. I'm so sorry about all of this. If it's any help, there is a large section in my research work that is about the importance of public funding (in the UK) that lauds it (remember I'm accentuating the positive) and talks about the amazing work that people who get paid far too little do. The 65 to 68 thing is ridiculous. It might work in my field, where I sit on my arse or wander about museums, but for a manual worker or even someone with vaguely more manual work than me, it's highly problematic. AND it's not what you signed on for.

Thanks....it's been an emotionally charged day. I'm just really angry about it all at the moment. I'm hoping that it either leads to negotiation, or I'm not opposed to further strikes.
