my best theory is that when you think "american" people tend to think in terms of ownership and individual interests, which in your liberal/socialist mind equates to greed and corruption that tend to accompany the free market. the social safety net is more often equated to european democracies, or as a result of the cold war, seen as a principle of soviet culture as opposed to western, hence labeled un-american.
as for social issues that seem to go the opposite way, people will always cite traditions and values as a way to make those who are more socially liberal appear anti-american, meh, it's like when democrats say that i hate poor people (i only beat them up and leave them for dead in the streets on tuesdays....) they're automated responses for people who dont have the information or the guts to debate with actual substance.
yeah well, i wrote a novel, but theres my ramblings for the day.
