Cost of a new (anounced today) 32GB iPhone 3GS w/ 2 year contract: $299
Cost if you are an existing iPhone/AT&T user who wants to upgrade to the 32GB Iphone 3GS: $699

The iPhone has never struck me as that interesting, but that pricing scheme seems ridiculous for a company with a loyal user base they want to entice to upgrade.

It's $299 with a new 2-year contract.

It's $499 with a new 2-year contract if you already have a contract with <1 year left in it.

It's $699 with a new 2-year contract if you already have a contract with >1 year left in it.

This is because the 3G model was subsidized by your plan.

They're all way too expensive for me to actually consider at this point, but the pre does have (IMHO) the greatest sex appeal

The cost of either device is relatively small compared to the cost of service, though, honestly. It's fascinating to me, though p'r'aps not surprising, how much we value our phones...
