The Tower

A short time before my arrival here, I received, in the post, a tarot card. The Tower. I've never believed in fate, adopting the opinion fate is something that those without the determination or willingness to make a difference believe in. Fate and destiny are always awkward when it comes to actions. Why should one act, put effort into ( Read more... )

oh the fun nekozawa would have here. superblynatural November 27 2008, 04:34:06 UTC
I've never put much stock in fate either - especially when someone blames their own mistakes on it. (If you do poorly on an exam, it was not "meant to be." It was not studying enough.)

Yes. Blaming one's mistakes on 'fate' is simply a cop-out for those who don't want to accept a situation or are unable to view themselves objectively.

At the very least it discourages them from taking responsibility.

There are unfortunately a lot of people who do not want to accept responsibility for their own mistakes.

I'd like to say I can imagine but unfortunately I don't have to.

I wonder if there is anyone who can 'imagine'.

Ah-- I'm Ryou Naruse. It's a pleasure to meet you.

Some are doing a pretty good job of imagining new ways to annoy people...

Fujioka Haruhi. Are you by any chance Japanese?

Perhaps it's a coping mechanism?

Yes. I grew up and worked in Tokyo.

Perhaps. Not that they'd ever admit it.

Really? All the people I've met who speak Japanese have been from other places... Well, worlds, I guess. You're the first I've met from Japan.

I'm from Tokyo too.

That's not a surprise. Those who employ coping techniques rarely wish to admit that that is what they're doing; it could be viewed as a weakness, after all.

Really? That is strange, although I haven't enquired as to the locations of where others are from.

Weakness is less annoying than rudeness.

Yeah. So are my friends, Hikaru, Kaoru, Tamaki-sempai and Hunny-sempai. We all attend the same school, in fact.

That may be so, but I'm not sure it would be the case to those that detest the idea of being weak, though, surely?

Oh? I'd say it must be nice to have your friends here, but I'm not sure that there's many people that would wish their friends to be in this place.

I guess it's a matter of perspective.

It's nice to be surrounded by familiar faces, and they've adapted well enough. Back home they were all quite rich... I don't think they've accepted the fact that they live in poverty yet.

Most things are.

I can imagine that must be pleasant for you.

It must be quite a shock for them.

this has been quite a good conversation for haruhi. she's so clueless about people. superblynatural November 27 2008, 05:17:44 UTC
Are none of your friends here?

I live in an apartment normally, so it's not as hard for me. They still act rich, but like you said, it's probably a coping mechanism.

No, they're not. It's probably a little sad to admit, but I wouldn't say I have many friends. A lot of the people I know are acquaintances; my work keeps me busy. Family is enough, though, I think.

There are some large apartments, but I suppose that's why the difference in terms of 'apartment' and 'mansion' exist, though. Someone living in an expensive 'mansion' wouldn't want their apartment to be mistaken for cheaper ones, but your point makes sense.

For the rich, it can be quite difficult for them to understand 'normal' life. There is, it seems, to be a completely different mindset that accompanies being rich.
