I hate football, but it can't be completely ignored. However, conversations are short when I drop the "I support Spain" line. All the Brits say, "oh well, they have a good chance" and go elsewhere to discuss their team. My husband tried to persuade me to sit at his side while England were playing. I told him I had much better things to do with my time. :o)
So you're a football hater! There are fewer and fewer here (we've all been brain washed) though there are Facebook groups called something like "Estoy podrida (=harta) con el Mundial" or something like that and then there are serious, intellectual discussions about "Football as the opium of the people" (I agree) but, ok, World Cup games are more fun. At least while we're winning ;)
LOL, yeah, indeed! I´ve been in England the last few days and they were going mad there -still not as much as the Argentinians, of course. Watched their match on a pub full of crazy supporters, the one against the US, and OMG what an embarrassment! Argentina did better from what I saw, though. I´m kind of rooting for them too.
Anyway, since my local team is hopelessly falling down the pit and might be in the inferior category as of next week (which is very difficult to leave) after a terrible season, the World cup is a welcome fun distraction where nobody is really risking much, and people from every country can join in!
The US goal was embarassing indeed! And yes! Everybody can join in and have fun! I hope Spain can turn things around (I read I've forgotten where that there are projections that Spain and Argentina will play each other in the semifinals! Let's hope we can get there)

Oh, Spain has never got that far in any World Cup!
Ah well football maddness... it was very quiet on the streets today :) We can do better, but at least the guys did not dissapoint the legion of fans here :)
I hear you about football madness! Nobody in the streets when Argentina play (literally). The upside is that you can cut your commute or shopping or whatever time by half! Or if Uruguay play, or Brazil or ... (always a good excuse) :D
