How weird, I'd doing a module on crime fiction and thjose are two of the set texts!

Detective fiction was only developing around the time of those novels so it tends towards being a bit formulaic. Linda La Plante is fantastic though.

That is a funny coincidence.

Yeah, I would guess that; Poe was really the start of modern detective fiction, wasn't he? I'm probably just spoilt by all the contemporary literature I read. Wish I got to read such stuff for my degree; I find non-fiction so tiresome... But I mostly just ignore my work and read on the side anyway, which is why I'm not doing an EngLit degree...much as I'd probably enjoy it.

Poe and Conan Doyle really, then the "golden age" of detective fiction was the inter war period. (dunno about after that, we're only in week 5 ;)

Do you have msn or something? You seem nice and I'm always glad to talk to new people and we have [some] stuff in common. But if that's too weird never mind :P

FW - who devours crime fiction - won't touch Agatha Christie.

What reasons does she cite?

What does she think of Conan Doyle?

I'll try to find out. I know she likes the Lord Peter Wimsy stories.
