Just watched the first part of Holmes, (on iPlayer for anyone on the UK)...so thought I'd write a bit about it. The following is some mildly spoilerific thoughts on the first episode.

I just read The Alchemist. Jeezum, what a yawn, I'm uncertain why it's so famous. It was stylistically beautiful for a while in a very very simple way (a 9 year old would do with it I'm sure) but about halfway through it just got annoying and repetitive; by the end I felt like I was reading a self-help book.
