So, in my quest to find a new career I went to an informal meeting thing at The Instructor College. Hey, I like driving and you can earn up to 30K a year as a driving instructor! And I might as well look at everything at the moment ( Read more... )

It doesn't sound like the worst deal in the world... although £3500 is a lot of money to pay in one go. I'd make very sure the job-guarantee was solid before I invested in that.

From what I can gather you don't have to pay it all in one go. Something to find out on Wednesday though.

It sounds a lot of money to pay out, but then you've got that qualification for good, and presumably it's always pretty easy to find a job?

Having another driving test sounds scary - gotta remember to drop all those bad habits!

Yep. Apparently they are crying out for driving instructors. Not necessarily gonna do it, especially as I don't have 3K hanging around, but worth looking in to.

My brother became a driving instructor - working for himself - a couple of years ago.

It's *VERY* hard work..

Yeah, I can imagine it is. Just an option I'm looking at for the moment.

Well if you need to bounce ideas off of someone, you have my email. I may even be able to put you in touch with him (no promises mind).

If I remember correctly, he started off with a "school", and then went on his own. I think it surprised him/us just how many Driving Instructors there are out there. It might be worth checking out, if you can, how many are already in your area. Suss out the competition, as it were.

Thanks. I might take you up on that.

Well apparently there aren't actually enough driving instructors. There are something like 17,000 active driving instructors in the country, and the government reckon around 2 million people will want to take their test this year! So, they are crying out for driving instructors.

I've got a one to one interview thing tomorrow so I'm going to find out more then.

I don't have it in me to be a driving instructor - almost killed me driving with my kids when they were learning! But if you have the nerves for it, cool!

And regarding your listening: Oh boy!

I'm not entirely sure I do. I remember taking my sister out once, and that was a nightmare. But then she isn't the easiet if people to teach anything to. She inherited my Dad's stubborn streak. *lol*

YAY! Quantum Leap!

T looked into the same thing and went for an interview with the BSM people when he was outta work at the start of this year. I think their course was slightly cheaper at about 2.5K and took you 6 months to complete if you were still working full time (you could do it quicker if you weren't) but still a shit cart load of money if you don't have a lump sum to invest eh? Same kinda deal though......ie. guaranteed work at the end of it.

Yeah, they said that BSMs course was cheaper. I just spoke to my Mum and she said if I really want to do it, then the money is there. So that is something I wouldn't have to worry about. Who knows!

Have you heard anything back from the football TV people btw?

The deadline isn't until 11th May, and there are allll sorts of other factors involved. I was basically told that I would definitely have a job there, but it turns out that wasn't true.
