sinboy is trying to start a discussion group for men to talk about feminist issues, privilege, what they have trouble seeing, when they've screwed up, how to improve, &c. I think it's a pretty awesome idea. If you're interested, you should go check out his post and get involved!

Hmmn...I've brushed up against sinboy in feminism-related discussions before.

Where, IIRC, I was accused of being a tool of the patriarchy for suggesting that the lack of 50/50 gender balance in some academic circles might be at least partially explained by the interaction of academia's traditional emphasis on continuous employment and publication with the point that (at present) women are more likely to have interrupted careers due to childrearing commitments [1].

This was considered to be an offensive attempt to deny that sexism exists in academia at all.

The way the group is described in his suggestion post is a strong disincentive to get involved. "Discussions" where large portions of the argument are automatically ruled off-limits are seldom productive. I have very little confidence of the survival in the group of any ideas which sinboy does not personally endorse ( ... )

Good to know some background. I believe that you cannot discuss sexism without including both genders and that it takes honesty from all about where we humans fuck up just cos we are humans. But discussion has to be open, an realistic, for there to be an impact.

Fortunately that fella is not my idiot boss. He is just an idiot boss. Will tell you more about it another time.

I told my dad about it. He asked me "so, who hit him first?". Dad had to learn a few things, being the father of two daughters. A belief in equal opportunities being one of them.
