Cold As Ice

Pressing enter with one last glance at the white page, Heechul watched as his title, column and page changed letters into the new entry. He watched the little picture of him move across the screen and sighed. Lying next to his laptop was a white pressed envelope with a matching letter to go with it, both with flower shapes indented into the thick paper.

He picked it up once more and scanned the contents of the letter before flicking his eyes to the clock on the wall. Leeteuk and Shindong would be home soon from their respective radio shows and who knows where Kangin was at this time. Probably out drinking with the little free time he had.

For the first time in a while, Heechul was actually in the dorm and able to sleep in his own bed instead of bunking in his van when schedules went overtime. He sighed in content and laid on the cool sheets of his bed as his mobile started to play his Nobody ring tone.

Heechul’s eyebrows furrowed and looked at the caller ID. Not recognising it, he flipped it open anyways and answered the call. “Hello?”

“Hyung! Is that you?”

“Hankyung?” Heechul sat up on his bed in the dark and watched as his laptop beeped. Moving forward he was able to see a new comment posted on his page from an anonymous user.

Prince Charming is here too ^^

“Tell Siwon to stop posting useless comments on my Cyworld.” Heechul could almost hear Siwon pout on the other end as he heard the background get slightly fuzzier.

“You can tell him yourself, I put you on speaker,” said Hankyung as Siwon said hi in the background.

Heechul smiled gently before straightening his back. “So to what do I owe this pleasure of this phone call all the way from China?” He stressed the last word to show his smugness over the phone. It’s not everyday he gets an expensive call from China.

Silence echoed from the phone before Hankyung spoke again with a cough as if to cover something Siwon said behind him. “Oh no reason, I was just randomly checking everyone’s Cyworld.”

“Right.” Heechul looked at his mobile suspiciously. “I sense an ethical conversation coming up.”

“Hyung! Are you okay?” Siwon butted in before Hankyung could reply. “You’re title and column is a bit worrying. Did something happen over there?”

‘Besides that letter from my high school girlfriend and me realising that I’m getting old, no, nothing has happened at all!’ is what Heechul wanted to reply sarcastically but he refrained. Instead, he replied with his stoic voice. “Of course nothing has happened. Siwon-ah, you should know my moods by now.”

“You seem a bit too calm for my liking.” Heechul scoffed at Siwon, picturing his eyebrows and expression at that moment.

“I knew you liked it rough,” said Heechul seductively as he heard a collective sigh from his partners. Hankyung muttered something in Chinese to Siwon and Heechul barked out, “Yah! No talking to each other in Chinese while I’m listening!”

“Sorry hyung.” Heechul smiled at the speed of their apologies.

Siwon changed the subject before awkward silence set in. “So, only one more week until we’re back together again!”

“I’m so excited to see everyone again!” said Hankyung excitedly. “I bet you’re excited too Heechul-ah.”

“Well, I suppose it’ll be good to see you two again,” said Heechul jokingly, allowing for some sarcasm to leak into the statement.

Siwon sighed dramatically. “Of course because you’re hopeless without us.”

“Hankyung! What have you done to him? He was never this sarcastic with me before!” Heechul gasped dramatically, making the other two laugh on the other line. “You’ve turned him against me!”

“That was your own doing! We hung around you too much,” laughed Hankyung as Siwon cracked up in the background.

A moment later, there was shuffling in the background as Hankyung’s voice faded and a new voice was put on.

“Hecchul-hyung! The manager came in and had to talk to Hankyung-hyung for a bit.”

“Ah, FishHae, is that you?”

“Of course hyung! Anyways, are you excited about the anniversary? I’m so excited to be with everyone again!!” Donghae’s voice faded as well but for different reasons.

“Hyung, stop jumping! H-Hyung!” Heechul laughed at hearing Siwon trying to calm down Donghae’s excitement.

“Siwon-ah, leave him be. He’ll probably collapse from exhaustion soon.” There was a moment of silence where Heechul suspected that Siwon nodded and Donghae bounded out of the room. “Since we’re on the topic, how are the others?”

Siwon took him off speaker. “Well Kyuhyun and Zhoumi are watching some drama about abalone while Henry and Ryeowook turned in for the night.”

“What?” Heechul quickly looked up the Chinese clock that he kept on one of his Internet pages. “Isn’t it around ten there?”

“Yeah, we haven’t been having a lot of free time lately. I think the TV stations are trying to get as many interviews and performances from us as they can before we go back.” There was a brief shuffling before Siwon was back on the phone. “Hyung, shouldn’t you go to sleep? It’s past midnight there, isn’t it?”

“Yeah, okay, I know when I’m not wanted anymore. I better turn in anyways, got a full day tomorrow with my best friends, Jay and Jungmo,” taunted Heechul as he rummaged through his clothes for his pajamas.

“I notice how you left Kangin-hyung out.”

“He doesn’t need to know that.”

Siwon laughed. “I’ll try my best not to mention it next time I talk to him.”

“I sense that a bribe will follow.”

“Just take care of yourself, hyung. And stop posting those entries on your Cyworld. You’ll confuse the fans again.”

“You know, that’s exactly what Kangin said to Leeteuk when he saw his Cyworld. Have you seen it recently? It’s so depressing.”

“If I recall correctly, you have a few of those entries as well.”

“Yes but they’re not all together and I don’t post multiple times a day.”

“Well hyung does get the most stress out of all of us.”

Heechul hummed in agreement as he slid into his bed under the cool sheets. “He stresses too much. Anyways, I’m going to sleep now.”

“Okay hyung! Good night.” Heechul smiled as he heard Hankyung yell out good night to him and Donghae screaming random words in Chinese and Korean in the background. “Oh before you go, make sure you call us or email us if you need to get anything off your chest, okay?”

“Yes Siwonnie.”

With a grab, Hankyung’s voice came back on. “Make sure to eat properly yeah?”

“Yes Hannie.”

Hankyung seemed to pause and think for a moment. “I’ll have to make some food for you when I get back. Who knows what you’ve been living off.”

“Yah, I can survive without you two!”

“Good night!” said Hankyung as Heechul hung up. He snuggled into the sheets with smile on his face, forgetting the letter that lay innocently on his desk.

As the sun shone into his room the next day, Heechul stirred awake and noticed that Leeteuk didn’t occupy the bed next to his anymore. “Did he even come home yesterday?” muttered Heechul as he got up to go and check if any petals commented on his Cyworld.

Upon seeing a long page of comments, Heechul smiled and clicked on it to expand.

Heenim oppa, please take care of yourself! You’re the shine in my day!

Heechul oppa, hwaiting!!

Oppa! Why is your heart turning cold? Don’t turn cold because it might attract more girls!!

Six more days until Cinderella is a princess again!! Chinaman and Simba

Laughing, Heechul sat down at his laptop and looked over at the letter tossed aside the previous day. Upon further inspection, he saw that there was a post-it attached to the letter now with Leeteuk’s scrawl over the yellow surface.

Heechul-ah, please think over how you’re going to reply to her.

Refraining for screaming at Leeteuk, who he knew was in the kitchen now, Heechul sighed and opened a new email. He mentally cursed himself for leaving his letter open for anyone to read and not hiding it from the meddling leader.

Five minutes and a short email later, Heechul joined Leeteuk in the kitchen for the breakfast that became bland on their tongues. Leeteuk looked over the cereal box at Heechul and waited for him to talk.

“What? It was just a wedding invitation.”

Leeteuk chewed on his cereal and continued to look at Heechul.

“Don’t worry, I declined and congratulated her of course. I barely have any time as it is to go to her wedding.”

“You’re not hung up over it or anything?” Leeteuk moved the cereal box out of the way.

Heechul scoffed. “No, why would I be? I have more important things to think about.”

Leeteuk held his hands up in defence. “Okay, okay, just checking.”

The two oldest members of Super Junior continued to eat in silence with the cereal box between them. As he neared the bottom of his bowl, Heechul cleared his throat.

“Besides, I got a call from Hankyung and Siwon yesterday so they made me forget.”

Upon hearing this, Leeteuk smiled and put his dishes away. “It’s good that you’re not going to post your thoughts all over your Cyworld.”

Heechul scoffed for a second time. “Speak for yourself, your fans are going to go grey prematurely from all the worry they get from reading yours.”

“It’s not my fault! I try to write something positive but I end up pondering over everything and it ends up being depressing!”

“Okay, okay.” Heechul patted the leader on the back. “I’ll believe you this time since Kangin probably scolded you for it already.

The older boy sputtered on his milk and looked at Heechul. “H-How would you know?”

“You’ve got to be kidding me.”
