Working Group, here we go. There is some blur here with shepherding dogs (here, the dogs tend more to be "livestock guardians," in other words, killers), some sled dogs, draft dogs, fishermen's dogs, some rescuing & tracking, some big game hunting breeds (which should mean the Ridgeback is in here, but nooooooo), guard dogs, war dogs, and though ( Read more... )

Yay Berners! I didn't watch the show but waiting to read your review on the Working Group. Re. Pyrenees, my neighbours have a female who is bigger than my Berner girl and Ruby is 26 inches at the withers and 80lbs.

Oh oh and you'd be pleased to know we're currently and have been since end Sept. fostering a rescue Pointer mix named Louie. He has an application in to be adopted by a nice lady in Massachusetts who wants a good dog to hike and canoe with <3

Yay for Louie! And thank you for giving him a temporary landing spot. Thank you, thank you, thank you. He's lucky if he gets a canoe lady. Are his toes webbed? If so, then maybe his pointer heritage includes a GSP. Oh, send me a pic at VERIZON dot net.

I referenced you (not by name) in the Working Group review in hopes that you would hold forth exactly as you did re the breed. You know so much more than I do about Berners and their cousins.

So thank you thank you for that too! Could you please talk about the diff between Bernese and the Great Swiss Mountain Dog? Have you ever seen two individuals together?

I miss your comments. I missed everybody in 2011. It was a long, sad, busy year and I wasn't on L J much. I lost my Gem November 30, and have been glum as anything since.

But the dog show helped, of course! Tell me how your Bern is doing. You've had her... two years now?

Pics sent!

I haven't actually seen a Swissy and Berner next to each other but have mistaken a shaved Berner for a Swissy. Form what I understand they are similar in size and temperament. Think a really well tempered Rottweiler. Although I think they have quirkier personalities and are bit harder to train. This is what I've been able to glean off my Berner group list of those who own Swissies and Berners. In the Swiss breeds there is also teh Entlebuch, Appenzell(cattle dogs),and smaller Swiss hound (hound breed. All of them are tri coloured!

As for Ruby she's doing great, going on 4 in March-happy and healthy. I don't know how she'll do when Louie is gone. I think she enjoys the canine company but is a jealous diva and tries to alternately eat and sit on him daily. I'll definitely update on that situation!
