I use too many commas, and too many extra, silly, words, though, and my writing turns out to be just one long line of a sentence, full of commas, and extra words, not making much sense, but possibly, maybe, making me sound, like an asthmatic, in, a, gasp, sort of, gasp, humourous way, in my essay, my English teacher, Sarah Hoddell, writes "Ha, you ( Read more... )

I like commas. I only hate commas when people use them instead of periods (and you don't usually do that).

Commas can become quite confusing. For example, is there some sort of limit as to how many you can use in a sentence? We were always taught in school that a comma goes between descriptive words, between items on a list, at a pause in the sentence, etc. We also learned that you can add a little part to the sentence that starts with a comma and ends with a comma, and if you took it out, the sentence would still make sense. Like this:

The monkey, who was carrying a knife, rode in on a motorbike.

But then, is it possible to make a sentence like that that also contains several pauses, a list and a lot of descriptive words?

I've always sort of liked English teachers. I can't actually think of one I haven't gotten along with. English has always been my strongest subject, so I suppose they've never really had reason to give me grief, apart from my excessive use of commas. I will curb these commas! ,,,,

That really sucks. It's always nice to have an English teacher you can get along with, rather than enjoying the subject but resenting it because of the lame teach you've been given. Why don't you get along with them? Do they all have similar personality traits that you just can't stand?
