The Elders

This is excellent.
The words of God do not justify cruelty to women

I do respect Jimmy Carter, and I need to learn more about the Elders:
"Jimmy Carter was US president from 1977-81. The Elders are an independent group of eminent global leaders, brought together by Nelson Mandela, who offer their influence and experience to support peace ( Read more... )

The main problem arises when people in churches think they are not subservient to God. Then they make up whatever doctrine they prefer - and we have to ask if that includes the people we want to agree with as well as the ones that we don't. The only authority is the bible; the problem arises from trying to make it say what we want it to, whereas we should be trying to let it make us like Jesus.

And of course, we all have biases that we are unaware of, hence the need for community. It's a balance.

Jimmy has been a man I respect for a long time. He sucked as President because he wasn't a politician... he is a *statesman*. I'm not surprised he and Nelson have ended up at the same table; they stand for a lot of the same things. While I don't subscribe to their theology specifically, I can definitely get behind a whole lot of the things their theology calls them to do... and not do.

Yes, exactly! He generated an amazing amount of hatred while he was in office, and people still say he was the "worst" President. How can they say that with the Shrub and so many others out there? It's a reaction to the lack of politics.
