So I just started grading my students' first essays. Another first semester Italian class, and the assignment was to pick a famous Italian and write about them in the present tense (historical present, really). You know: "Dante is born in 126-whatever. A hilarious article from Slate about diagramming Sarah Palin's utterances.

Hope everyone will be watching the debate tonight with a bottle of something stronger than water available, and perhaps also with some Tylenol, as the article suggests.

My motorcycle is insured, titled, registered, and inspected. I took my first ride in traffic today, from Scott's garage to the mechanic who did the inspection, on the other side of Easthampton, and back to Scott's. When I get organized enough I'll get someone to drive me out there so I can bring the bike back. Maybe tomorrow?

Next semester I'm planning on teaching my students grammar (*gasp*) starting in the first week of school with a sort of intensive summary of how grammar works. Parts of speech, recognizing which nouns, verbs or adjectives modifiers are modifying, that sort of thing. I'm thinking that sentence diagramming might be a fun (for me) way to go about it ( Read more... )
