Definitely not an only child thing; he's an asshole.
I'm the exact opposite! My phone is on silent, all the time. A complains every once in a while because I miss his impromptu calls all the time, but there's seriously nothing worse than having your phone ring during class or work or a concert or any public space ever..

I completely agree! It can get very annoying, very fast. But I have a thing about answering back in a prompt manner, no matter the person or reason, so having my phone on silent makes me much too paranoid!
