an old house has sounds, especially night sounds. as i stirred a bit of ginger into soup tonight, i heard a pitter, a pattering. water dripping? i've heard that before, and do not want to hear it again, at least not suddenly, as when the ceiling started to drip. mouse feet? more frequent, more likely, but not that, either. i turned to see a pasta

We had a bit of that two weekends ago when I was visiting last---where's that burning smell? do you smell smoke?
It turned out to be the rubberish plastic making up the tee-ball stand Aunt Terry bought for Henry's birthday; after I found the baseball bat I pulled it out and we took it inside when done, but woof! that thing stinks of that unpleasant plasticy smell that's a close neighbor to burning rubber.
