Homeschooling thoughts

So, I'm currently looking at Bob Jones curriculum for K4, for Korban. It's about 1.5hrs of video each school day, with a bit of homework on the side afterwards. My sister used it for her daughter, and now she's on to K5, and planning on continuing ( Read more... )

I would definitely have a problem with the month-long celebration of Halloween too, yikes!

And if you're going to be on the road a lot, yeah, it would be a lot more convenient to homeschool. Also, is there an attendance law for kindergarten in Canada? If so, they may not allow Korban to miss a lot of days and still pass the grade.

Let me give you my thoughts on your other questions:

1. That sounds like a great reason! Some kids really learn a lot by what they see (visual learners), and it sounds like Korban is one of those.
2. Why not start now?? Especially if you know you'll lose some school days with traveling and possibly moving and such. If he seems ready, and you're ready, start!! :-)
3. If you think he's probably ready, he probably is. Could you start him and, if he isn't ready after all, just hold off for a bit? Or you could do something like one day on, one day off, etc. to ease him into it?

I don't think there's an attendance law, but I think they would call to see why he's not there if I didn't send him one day. This is the first year in our town that K4 is now full-time (all-day/5 days a week) but it's still flexible enough that you can choose when you send them as long as you stick to it and make it a regular schedule so the teacher knows when to expect the child.

I really do think Korban is a visual learner. He also has quite the imagination, so I guess time will show how it all works out. :)

I talked to a lady who sells BJU, and she said that they have a special offer for missionaries that would allow me to keep the DVDs as long as I want (instead of a 13-mths limit). THAT makes me really excited! Because I can start and not feel like he has to be done in the next year, but go at his pace. I'm really excited at this new development. :)

That sounds like a pretty flexible system!

Aw, that's great about not having a limit for how long you keep the DVDs. That'll work out great for you!

Interesting post. I've been starting to think the whole idea of "pushing your child before their ready" too, as Emily may be advanced for her age now, but will it continue? I joke that she'll be ready to read by 3, lol. And maybe she will, but if she's not interested, will I force it? I think that's the beauty of homeschooling. Everything is a learning opportunity, you start your child where a grade or level says they need to be, but then adjust it to THEIR learning abilities ( ... )

Great thoughts! Thank you for typing it out. :)

The DVDs are actually rented. You pay for the kit and keep the teacher's guide and student workbook, but you return the DVDs after 13mths.
