Ah, my dear - that "pretty terrible" experience was also one of the most valuable lessons of my life. I've thought about that event, too, over the years -- now I can honestly say that had I not gone through that relationship (the highs, the lows, the frustrations, challenges, betrayal, humiliation and heartbreak), I'm fairly confident I'd never have gotten my shit together and both opened myself to the possibility of a real passionately committed partnership AND set my standards high enough to make that partnership a beautiful thing of lifelong learning and growth.
Righ now, there's a 22 week, 2 day old fantastically active baby inside me who, if he/she could, would (I believe) thank you for introducing me to that friend. Namaste.
I'm sure you would have been fine without someone pushing you into it! And if not, li'l jumpy could just thank the van driver who set the whole thing in motion! It comes down to what I'm willing to take credit for...
Yay for the little jumpy dude! I have a 5 year old one outside of me who is still waking me up at 2 a.m. It's an adventure and I'm so happy you're in!
In other news: ran into Paul last week at the Franklin County Muni Court! Stayed with the fam a few months ago -- the girls are beautiful, the little boy is a year younger (I think?) than Max and I can't wait for the two of them to meet. Paul works downstairs, Terri works upstairs at City Hall. All is well.
It's possible that what you consider accidental is merely unconscious. People inclined to kindness sort of set themselves on a trajectory to do more, deliberately or not. Same with assholes and what they do.
That helps --- good folks are good folks (even when rotten things happen as a result of trying to help). I wouldn't call it "unconscious," though. It is just good nature.
I still think it's better to do nice things on purpose. Mens rea, and all. We built an entire system on the idea.
