Finally, we got to Roseau. We dropped Keith and Mary off, and went to the main p.o. to mail postcards and get stamps. We ate at Callaloo restaurant -- just callaloo soup (green) and drinks and bread.

We drove up to the Layou Valley Inn -- got a huge room w/nice bath and hot water! We enjoyed the hot water -- our 1st yet since arriving ( Read more... )

We stopped in a Carib snackbar to get drinks after hiking to Tete Chien (not a far walk, but was very hot out). Keith and Mary irritated the old Carib woman who worked there. She said the Caribs were going to take back all of Dominica, "No more Roseau!"

We picked up more hitchhikers, Keith and Mary. They were on their way to Roseau, on the other side of the island. We were going nowhere in particular, so we took them all the way.

On the way we went to "Tete Chien" (head of the *snake* not dog, for some reason?) and Emerald Pool. The Emerald Pool was milky from construction. Keith ( Read more... )

The next day we went to the airport and picked up Ben's bag. On the way, we drove through the Carib territory and bought baskety gifts. We picked up a 10-yr-old-or-so boy on his way to the airport from school ( Read more... )

An AVIS man came to take us to our car. Ben ordered a manual, forgetting that he'd have to learn to shift with his left hand.

We signed the papers and packed up the car. We headed for Calabishie. Three youngish teenagers -- two girls and a boy -- were hitchiking to visit some grandparents. We took them as far as Calabishie. They ( Read more... )

Our room had a slotted window w/no screen that looked right onto the street. The room had a bed and sink, a shoddy cabinet and table. We took a nap immediately. Later, we found the bathroom down the hall.

I was brave enough to go to the end of the hall and find, outside, a walled garden and restaurant. The place was "World of Food" -- Jean Rhys's ( Read more... )
