Winning

Learning games is hard. I could never, can never, follow directions -- I just have to do it. Moreover, I have trouble caring enough to try to win or not win if and when I finally do figure out the rules. You can see how things like law school and learning to drive were problematic ( Read more... )

I knew my law school career was tanking when my friend Steve told me "Learning evidence in a classroom is like learning to drive by reading a book."

Me neither! I wrote hilarious skits for "Law Revue" but law review was another story -- didn't even try. My Contracts professor read aloud from my work as a bad example. (This only fueled my Law Revue passions!)

Of course I had saved mine from college so we didn't have to buy one on Ebay, though we did have to buy an old version of Clue on Ebay because Jonathan prefers the '70s style photos to the new cartoons. And the bonus of Miss Scarlet smoking!

Gus is not super into analog games, never has been, he really prefers digital. J+I are like your mom, we love all games, and I'm not sure where we fell down on getting G to like analog games. But we're trying to break down his resistance.

Not enough games feature anything purple, I have to agree!

We have a Winnie-the-Pooh version, too, I think. Hard to keep track. The sheets are still with us -- not the comforter, though.

Are we the only people we know who can say things like "Of course I had saved mine from college?" :-) I was just thinking, I took so many coloring books with me to Chicago -- just realizing that perhaps doing so was not this side of normal. Oh well, that's why we <3 us!

p.s. I'm with J. on the old Clue. Of COURSE Miss Scarlet is smoking! And Prof. Plum looks creepy as hell. I was always suspicious of him.

Epilogue annes3 July 22 2011, 05:16:27 UTC
He would NOT play this game with her. We thought it was win-win -- he wins, she thinks she wins, everyone is happy, right? Wrong! He really wanted to not only win, but have her know she lost!

Finally he relented and tried to teach her one more time. But he advised, "If you get the old maid, it doesn't mean you win it means you LOSE."

MJ asked: "What *do* you get if you win?"

That stopped him in his tracks. I mean, the answer is -- nothing. You're out of cards. That doesn't seem American, somehow. It doesn't seem like winning as we know it. He was unable to explain that whoever reached this void first won.
