No, haven't gotten it yet. But it's coming on my birthday. And I'm floored that we qualify. Really floored.
Yeah, I just went to Borders and checked out the Sony e-Reader, the new one. It seems nice. It has kind of a lot of buttons, more than I think they really need, but I suppose I'd get over that since they don't seem to be the kind of buttons you can press accidentally. Neither Sony's nor Cybook's software works on Mac, so they're equal on that score. :/ Cybook accepts more file formats, including html. BUT, it's only available online as far as I know, and they're out of stock, and (and this is the kicker for me), to get in line for one you have to place an order AND they charge you right away, even though they can't tell you when they'll ship. WTF???

But doesn't it bug you that you can only buy ebooks from Amazon? Some of the things I'll want to read on my eReader may not be available from them, especially since they're putting the squeeze on POD publishers, many of whom are also e-publishers.

Being compatible with only one file format is total bullshit, and completely inexcusable in this day and age. That would turn me off right there. What format does Amazon offer in its ebooks?
I like reading ebooks on my PDA. I have a Dell Axim Pocket PC that I bought several years ago. Reading a book on it is not processor intensive at all. What I did was get some freeware e-reader software that can handle a variety of formats. I ended up with ubook (that's the greek letter mu), and had a fine time reading it. I paid around $500 for my PDA several years ago, and I was thinking of selling it and found out it is worth about $40, so you could actually by a crappy old PDA on Ebay and probably do just fine with it

Are there any brick and mortar stores selling e-readers where you can go and handle them?

My experience is that the Amazon Kindle beats the Sony Reader hands-down. You can compare the specs for both in the right-side of page at
