Hello mary_mayhem May 13 2008, 02:42:15 UTC
I've stolen some of your words from the Utne Cafe. I gave you credit, but thought I should give you an opportunity to tell me to take it down.

I have questions mary_mayhem May 16 2008, 01:36:18 UTC
First, what time of year should I try the glass trick for the roses?

Second, how well does periwinkle spread? Could I use it for ground cover?

(Envisioning your husband getting a report that all is dull and benign.)

Up here, roses bloom in late June and July - so I imagine (remember, it was 50 years ago!) I took them and planted them then. So when you get some rose blooms, plant them right away - and don't panic when they look awful, or the jam jar (a Mason pint jar would be perfect, or a mayonnaise 500 ml jar which is the same thing) gets all blobby with condensation. In the Fall when its going to get cold (does it in NC?) - here that would be mid October, cover them up with leaves. Mine were against the house, so I banked the leaves up against it. If you plant yours in the middle of the garden, pile the leaves on top.

Periwinkle - spreads well - sparsely in wooded areas as the ground is usually barren and often has pine needles on it, but in shaded areas with decent soil, or places with only a short time of direct sun and lots of indirect, it spreads nicely.

Good luck!!
