Donna likes being the favorite.
Donna is the companion the 10th Doctor needed. It’s a shame she joined him so late in the game.
The Doctor needs his companions to give him perspective and help him experience the wonders of the universe. In return, he helps them realize their latent potential. Donna is a perfect example of this.
I’m not ashamed to admit it. When Donna was first introduced, I hated her. When we first met her, she was shallow, vapid, and self-centered. She’s directionless and unhappy. She clings to the first man who shows her the slightest bit of interest and doesn’t realize he can’t stand her.
But she meets the Doctor and he shows her a small glimpse of the wonders of the universe. It’s too much for her and she passes up the opportunity to travel with him. It didn’t take her long to realize her mistake. She looks for him. And by looking for him, she discovers the world around her. And when she gets another opportunity to go with him, she holds on and won’t let go.
Donna is the perfect companion for Tennant’s Doctor. She’s smart and brave and even more headstrong than him. She keeps the Doctor’s ego in check. I love to watch Donna and the Doctor snipe at each other. Even when they argue, they do it with love. There are too few friendships like this shown on TV, especially between people of two different genders.
The Doctor and Donna are thrilled that Agatha Christie sees they're not married.
Of course, the fact that Donna becomes so wonderful makes her fate that much more painful to watch. I like to think the changes to her personality stay with her. That even though she’s back to gossiping and celebrity-watching, she remains aware of her potential so she can realize it on her own.
