Bunny news: big old bunny (hare, but we'll say bunny) was hanging about all day, so I tried to make friends with him. I thought it was weird that he was about in mid afternoon and so stoic about my presence, but I figured--well, this imagines I was thinking, which obviously I wasn't--that he was just particularly tame and looking for food, ( Read more... )

Perhaps they are not.

The unity of the body is a social construct.

This neighbor sounds almost as interesting as the bunnies.

It sounds like you might not have needed to pay the neighbor.

When I was a kid I wanted a bunny, so my brother caught a baby bunny that was running around outside. We kept it in a trashcan but it wouldn't eat. Since it was getting sick we let it go. I'm pretty sure it made for some other animal's dinner within days of release. True story. I never thought of trying to toughen him up, though. Now I've got blood on my conscience.

If they are still on milk, their diet is really, really finicky. It's super hard to give them something they'll tolerate even with proper bunny formula, and they tend to get sick and die with stuff they don't tolerate. I had two baby hares years ago I tried to feed formula with a needleless syringe, but it made them sick. :( This guy is eating grass so I think he'll be OK, but I haven't seen him in a few days, so I think he's either run off or got eaten. :(

I had pet rabbits that I actually bought at the store, instead of, you know, catching in the wild and taking them from their mommy. The first (of two) had a really badly messed up front teeth, so that the two front teeth curved outward and grew outside of his mouth, to the point where if it got too long it would have curled back upon his nose. So we had to cut his teeth every so often. At first I brought him to someone to do it, who showed me, and eventually I started doing it myself. I felt so bad for the poor guy, it must have hurt, and he freaked out every time we did it, but he would have died if we didn't because he wouldn't have been able to eat. So yeah, I seem to have bad luck with hares...my second one was an albino with pink eyes, which was all kinds of awesome.
