From necessity. In order for human society to survive and thrive, an open dialogue of ideas and knowledge is essential. Oppression of speech is the first step on the way to oppression in general. Look at Newspeak in Nineteen Eighty-Four (although as a Linguistics major, I'm obligated to mention that the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis is true only in a limited sense). The right to free speech is inalienable simply because we cannot survive without it.
