Depends on what sort of effect you mean.

Well it's all chemistry and what not. Humans beings (infact all living creatures) give off body oders that we don't even actually pick up on. In thse scents that our minds pick up on sub-conciously we decided if we like this person. This scent basicly tells our bodies whether this person is a good match for us to reproduce with.
This is easier to explain when actually saying it. I guess it's kinda hard to explain. And I bet this didn't answer your question at all.
