[Mewtwo takes to the journals for his first real post to the network - he spends more time thinking over what needs to be said than actually writing. Placing words on a page for everyone to see is different than communicating directly to someone, and isn't something that Mewtwo quite understands the way most others seem to. Language isn't an ( Read more... )

[Depressed or not, draft or not, mild-hangover-effects-still-bugging-him or not, this was written by a non-human sapient. It had to be.

So it instantly gets Robert's attention. Even if the writing is strange - spastic, all over the place, with scattered markings through it - it's legible enough that he can understand it.]

Well. I am a homo sapiens myself - but I presume, from you asking this question, that you are not? [As an astrobiologist, this intrigues him muchly.]

... And what is a "Pokemon"?

Pokemon is what is not human - in my own world

but that cannot be true here

[He doesn't really know how to define it anymore.]

So your world has two species only - humans and Pokemon? [That seems like an extremely restricted biosphere.]

Are Pokemon perhaps an extremely varied species? Similar to something like domesticated canines on pre-Terran Earth?

Regardless, I am enthusiastic to meet another non-human sapient. It is always a pleasure seeing the vast scope of life in the multiverses.

[Okay, I grew up with a scientist and all and I should be used to this, but holy crap dem words. Let's see here - points to the first, what the hell are canines on pre-Terran blah blah, joy in scientific curiosity - yeah, that last one is obvious.]

there are many kinds

[Hopefully that answers the question...?]

[Robert has no clue Mewtwo can't follow what he's saying. The poor Pokemon...]

Ah, I see... It would be most fascinating to study them sometime.

The only other visible non-human sapients I have met here are large anthropoid trachemys scripta elegans, mutatens - well, that was how he identified himself to me, anyway. If I have met others, I have yet to identify them. [Robert has met them, he just doesn't recognize them because they're too human-looking.]

[He can, but it takes him a while - humans use language the way Pokemon use their own instincts, for more intricate communication than the simple information exchange that Mewtwo reserves his words for. It's sifting through the formalities and the idioms and the tone-of-voice to get to the meaning that's the difficult part.

....except for when scientific names come into it. Because that's just cheating.]

I do not know what that is.

are you a human scientist?

[It's.

it's kind of obvious.]

[When it comes to formalities, Robert corners the market. He practically breathes pretentious diction.]

It is the Latin name for a species of turtle commonly referred to as a "red-eared slider". Well, minus the "mutatens" part on a typical turtle of that species, anyway...

Yes, I am. More precisely, I am a Terran astrobiologist - I study non-human sapients from outside of Terra. Which I presume would include those like yourself.

[To be fair to Mewtwo, a significant portion of non-scientist Terrans would speak quite similarly to how Robert does.]

-you know what, forget it]

What is Terra?

[A turtle is what happens when you add a Turtwig and a Squirtle together.]

Terra is the name for the third planet in the Sol star system - in its past, it was called "Earth". More people seem to recognize its past name here than its present name, for whatever reason.

[Oh. Well. You should have said that in the first place.]

your world

[and you study aliens. Mewtwo knows an alien! He is a cool bro.

The scientist that Mewtwo is familiar is also a cool bro dad. You are getting an instant coolness credit for that, and that is why he is putting up with the...wordage.]

Yes, my world. It seems to be quite different from most of the worlds here, though... No paranormal things as far as I was aware of.

Is your world also a paranormal one?

And what may I call you by? [Robert's not sure if he should use formalities for a non-human sapient...] I am Professor Robert Alexander Hastings.

["Paranormal" for your world is not "paranormal" for mine, though.

I mean, if Ghosts are a recognized taxonomical order...]

what is paranormal?

[A pause.]

I am Mewtwo.

which name can I use?

['Cause you've got a lot, buddy.]

Something "paranormal", in my world, is defined as a phenomenon, object or creature whose existence cannot be explained by rational means. They are inconsistent with the generally-accepted scientific empirical measurements and observations that already exist of the universe.

Examples would be things like magic, souls, psychic powers [- and that one'll strike a chord for Mewtwo -], demons and the like.

... All of which I have heard talk of here. And in the case of magic, have witnessed myself.

[Mewtwo... The fact there was a two in the name, a number on Terra, was fascinating.] It is a pleasure to meet you, Mewtwo.

My first name, Robert, would be acceptable - as would Professor Hastings if you wish for the formalities. [Robert's getting used to people wanting to drop the formalities with him. It's still strange, but...]

[your world

sounds pretty damn boring]

there are Psychic Pokemon. Ghost Pokemon are sometimes called souls

humans do things here which only Pokemon can at home - some called magic?

[He really doesn't know.]

Robert is shorter to write.

[Boring? Who knows. In Luceti, it's one of the most unique worlds there.

But it's certainly a rational, logical world - perhaps that would be boring to most. To Robert, it's comforting; understandable.]

I see... your world must have a very fascinating biosphere, indeed. It isn't inconceivable that physics and the evolution of life on your planet have allowed for that sort of thing... though I have yet to understand how, exactly. I intend to make something of a personal project regarding the study of magic-like phenomena here.

Feel free to use Robert, then. [Robert wonders if Mewtwo has difficulty writing - maybe zie [as Robert can't afford to be cisgenderist] has some trouble manipulating the pen. Or maybe zie simply doesn't want to write much - such were the intricacies of non-human sapient minds.]

[Mewtwo would respond faster if he knew what the hell that all meant.

...as it is, he spends a few minutes puzzling the sentences out before he realizes that it's more of the enthusiastic scientific-curiosity babble and just skips to the end.]

project?

how?
