2) I can purchase a desktop PC for $400. $400. I can't buy an iPhone for $400. Think about that.

Heck, I've got a Compaq laptop that is almost 2 years old, and it's still alive and kickin'. And it was probably $550 with taxes and a warranty.

I see your Compaq laptop for 550 and raise you one Dell w/ XP for $400 (due to employee purchase program discounts and holiday sales being stackable)

Ha ha ha! I'm with you--Mac at work, PC at home. And I don't regret either choice.

Oh, how I share your loathing of AT&T. If all the other phone services cease, and AT&T is the sole cell provider left standing, I will resort to smoke signals.

Like most things in life, choosing a computer is a series of compromises. I like my MacBook despite the white case, camera, glossy screen, large size, software issues, etc. But I don't understand the folks who think it is the best thing ever, or for all applications.

About (1), XP installs well. Also, dosbox works really well for old games. About (8), the MacBook is still available in black. Just costs too much. And isn't an iphone $400 now?

You might look at the Dell XPS. I used one the other day and it seemed like a great box. Pretty sure they will ship it with XP still...
