So, about my dad...

This week, I went to visit my dad. I left the house at 5a Wed morning (EDT) to get to the Philly airport, took two flights (connecting through Denver) to Eugene, then drove 2:40 to get to his house, arriving shortly before 5p PDT. (Basically, 12 hours door to door ( Read more... )

Oh man - this is so hard. I've been having discussions with Bossman recently, because his wife's family has a history of memory issues and dementia in old age - and they have been talking about "what do we do when I lose my mind". Her request is that Bossman should "put her out of her misery" - his - eminently practical side - is like "I'm going to vastly outlive you" (based on family history) - and I don't want to be incarcerated for your murder for my golden years? I'm so sorry ... it must be hard for you to see him like this. And it's difficult to do something when you're so far away.

So I agree with what spiffikins said: the move to a care home will be hard for him anyway, so why not move him somewhere close to you to at least make it easier for you in the future? I have to admit, though, I have no idea how you could get him into a plane etc without any documents ...

So sorry you're going through this. Sounds really hard with lots of big challenges. My FIL had dementia but at least my SIL lived nearby and could look in on him while he was still living at home and later when they moved him to a care facility. Moving your Dad closer to you would definitely be a big plus, but those POA papers. Oy. Thinking of you and wishing you strength!

I’m so sorry. What a terrible situation to find when you visited your father, on just about every imaginable front. Well done for getting him to a doctor and an immunisation clinic in such a short period of time!
