Bellatrix Mythen still wanted to shake people until answers fell out, but a brochure labeled Guide to the City had been helpful enough. Bella looked over the brochure again and tried not to think about Lareh.

There was always the possibility that this place wasn't real. That she was still trapped in Lareh's basement and was falling prey to yet another of his illusions. But that answer didn't make sense; he had been crazy, yes, but never this subtle or imaginative.

And besides, she remembered gunshots and Vinseth's voice, remembered handing in her resignation and watching in amusement as Vinseth tried to explain to Cazgo what an occult negotiator did. She remembered happiness.

Memories didn't stop the fears. They never had. That her life was a lie, a fiction, that her family would find her. That Vinseth would--
