This past week there was a post on the Asatruar lj list asking "which god should I ask for help in XXXX area" (paraphrased)... The problem with being gone a few days is when you post a reply it is usually never seen since most have moved on from the thread, it had been 3 days since the last post when I replied, I doubt anyone has really seen it ( Read more... )

You're not the only one who finds it annoying when people try to reduce deities to static functions. It's not only ignorant, but disrespectful to our gods as well. To quote Marion Ingham, "It makes them merely the gods of simple people who gawped at the sky and cowered when it thundered and lightened - as opposed to the one real god, who is an abstraction only more advanced peoples can imagine."

My response to the Astruar LJ (which I'm not on) would have been, "Whichever gods or goddesses you have a strong relationship with." Why on earth would anyone ask a god for a favor if he doesn't already have some knowledge of and relationship with that deity? It's like walking up to a total stranger and begging for a handout. And I know there are homeless bums who do that, but I wouldn't want to join their ranks on a spiritual level. When I do ask for help (which is rare) I almost always speak to Ingui Fréa. Even if it isn't his area of expertise, he's a god so he's probably pretty good at whatever it is I need. And if not, I've heard ( ... )

I've always tought that the Godds areas of responcibility overlap. I mean, come on... Odin is the mead god, Agir the brew god. Nord the god of the sea and shipping, Odin the god of cargos. Frey, Freya, Siff, Thor, Eir, are all godds of health, fertility, crops, and defenders of the home. They all pull together to acheve the common goal. Just like a community of people...should.

Yes, the pigeon-holing can be annoying. Something which is related to this is when someone encounters a god who has a lot of similar qualities as another god, and then concludes that they are one and the same. Why can't people just accept that many of the Gods share a lot of qualities, interests, and skills? I mean, my brother and I are similar in many ways, both in our temperament, our looks, our interests, our skills, etc. But would anyone in their right mind say, "Well, surely you are not really two separate individuals, but are one and the same!" If there can be people who can have many overlapping qualities, and still be completely separate individuals, then why on earth (and Asgard!) can't it be the same with the Gods ( ... )
