Why do men think that women on the subway really, really, want to get laid? Is it the fact that you're basically a captive audience and the only option is to politely fend off their sexual advances until one of you reaches your destination? Is it the fact that the car full of other dudes makes it a homosocial behavior even if his buddies aren't ( Read more... )

I agree with the surge. I've actually never hit on someone I've met on public trans. At the very least - though fine people like yourself ride SEPTA - the majority of the selection is pretty nasty. People go to bars to get laid. People ride SEPTA to go places. If someone hits on you in a bar it is socially acceptable, since we acknowledge there is a time and a place to desperately try to achieve orgasm with another human. Usually, rush hour on the train is neither the time nor the place. While being hit on when you're not at all engaged with someone is always galling, it is particularly mystifying when it's somewhere like the subway, or standing in line for fast food, or while walking down the street. Obviously the point is not for whoever is hitting on you to have sex, but to indicate their ability to disturb others and assert dominance in a vaguely threatening sexual manner.
