Haha, I loved Absolutely Normal Chaos.

When I was in 5th grade I read Wally Lamb books. Which were also inappropriate and smutty but honestly any 12 year old who reads is going to be keeping their eyes peeled for smut at around that age anyway.

I read She's Come Undone in 4th grade, so I was 10 or 11. I never read the one about the twins. Wally Lamb taught my mom highschool English.

Maybe something like Good Omens? I discovered Terry Pratchett about that age.

I was trying to remember what else I liked then and I came up with Stephen King, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, and Catch-22, none of which I think are particularly good ideas.

OH. YEAH. GOOD OMENS IS GREAT. Alternatively, Feet of Clay by Terry Pratchett is a good starting point in the Discworld books.

Also, there's always Twilight (jk please don't do that sweet jesus).

At this age, I had this thing about reading everything by a given author that I could get my hands on, even if I didn't like any of their books. I think someone had given me a book by Anne McCaffrey at around that time, so I was slogging through her godawful dragon books.

Probably other bad fantasy and sci-fi books, also.

If they're comfortable with sci-fi/fantasy type books, Sabriel by Garth Nix is the first in a really awesome series.

Also, Artemis Fowl? Or is that too young?
