Flame that sputters and dies away.

I reviewed an Elizabeth bashing story as Miss Swann herself here:

http://www.fanfiction.net/reviews.php?storyid=1669749/

One of the reviewers posted a response which I had to post:

Man, I just read the flame you got, and I think she's an idiot. Elizabeth is not ( Read more... )

Now I'm going to have to be nosy.... blackpearl500 February 27 2004, 20:11:00 UTC
The person is a moron. Most morons don't need others to point it out, they share it with the world. The ranting fangirl is no exception. I guess I'll just go see what all the fussing is about.

Followed you here from POTCsues...

And I love the review by "Darkfire222". Sample:

who the hell does the person think she is? Elizabeth poser? gosh, if she didn't like Elizabeth bashing fics, then why the fuck do ppl write this crap.

I could stare at that all day and I don't think it would make any more sense. If she didn't like... then why do people write... Help, I'm entering a Black Hole of Illogical Logic!

Keep up the good work. :D

The thing that I find more worrisome is what seems like deliberate misunderstanding between a lot of the reviewers and myself.

Witness the line I wrote: "Many Will admirers criticize Commodore Norrington for being stuffy and hard-headed, but he showed far more wisdom and consideration for others than most squealing fangirls do."

Note the word, "many". Not "most". Not "all".

And yet, what are the responses?

"And all Will fans don't hate Norrington (who the hell ever said that?) I personally like how he bows out gracefully when he realizes Elizabeth loves Will (all three of whom the fangirls know AREN'T REAL!!)"

" I'm a Will supporter and a Norrington supporter, where did she get the idea of Will supporters hate Norrington."

"Also, before I forget, HOW THE HELL CAN YOU ASSUME, 'MISS SWAN', note the Misspelled Monkey THAT ALL WILL FANS DISLIKE NORRINGTON? What a bloody load of bull-shit." This last was delivered along with a PARAGRAPH pointing out the fact that it's possible to be a Norrington admirer and a Will admirer, which ( ... )

Hi! Just migrated over from potcsues.

I think my favorite little bit of this drama is one of the fangirls in response to your review:

gosh, if she didn't like Elizabeth bashing fics, then why the fuck do ppl write this crap.

When I read that, I couldn't help thinking, "Her point exactly!"

I love it how now I have "possession issues" as well, just because I wrote from the point of view of Elizabeth. I find that hilarious because I've never found Will or Orlando Bloom attractive, and my favorite character by far is Captain Jack Sparrow. Will's a noble character, but he's as stock as they come ( ... )

I think it's the best thing ever when you specify that a statement is only referring to a specific group of people with specific defining traits, and then five million people, who deny that they possess any of those traits, take offense.

The absence of all logic is just hilarious.

Sometimes I wonder how their brains work.

"Hey! She made fun of Will fangirls who abuse Commodore Norrington! I'm not one of them! I'm going to flame her!"

Someone, help me out. The wires aren't connecting.

How do their little brains reconcile taking offense at the mocking of those specific traits with the belief that they don't possess those traits at all?
