Chapter 2 “Just a little bit more.” Nino thought. His eyes screwed shut as he buried himself deeper into the crook of Ohno’s neck.
“Just..” his hands gripped the back of Ohno’s shirt. “…a little bit…” he squeezed his eyes some more, nearly to the point of pain.
“More.” he silently whimpered.
Ever so slowly, Nino opened his eyes, loosening his hold on Ohno. Sadness and disappointment painfully swelling his heart. Holding Ohno in his arms was the best, wonderful, and tremendously amazing feeling he had ever felt before. And he thought it would be enough. Enough to make him satisfied, enough to make him happy, enough to content him; enough to give him the strength to move on.
He honestly thought it would.
But all that Nino felt was emptiness. His longing heart cried painfully in his chest.
“Nino,” a soft voice called him. He could felt Ohno’s hands on his back, stroking him gently.
Nino thought he could cry.
“Nino” he called again, much softer this time. “what’s wrong? tell me.”
If only he could tell Ohno what’s wrong. “You’re so close Ohno, too close, yet so far away.”
Nino released Ohno slowly. Despite how hollow he felt on the inside, Nino managed to display a smiling facade to the worried Ohno. He soothed his aching heart and put on his miraculously acting talent to use.
“I hugged Oh-chan,” Nino beamed at Ohno, looking smug. “now I can brag about it to everyone, especially my sister!” he began to cackle menacingly. “Oh, I could imagine the look on her face when I tell her later!”
Ohno blinked. “You called me ‘Oh-chan’.” he suddenly pointed out.
“Eh?” Nino was staggered, "I did?" and after one blessed seconds of self-loathing, Nino finally managed to pull himself back together, confronting the older man with false self-confident.
“So?” Nino challenged, not believing his own daring.
Ohno gazed at Nino thoughtfully, “That’s the first time someone calls me that.” He took a moment before cocking his head to the side, and smiling brightly at Nino, “I like it.”
Nino blushed slightly at the smiling Ohno. He silently marveled at how a simple smile could easily alter his turbulent emotions. Just moments ago, he had been hollow and wretched, practically in the midst of burying himself deep inside his dark, lonesome heart. Now, that familiar aching pain had gone along with his loneliness. He felt his body became lighter as unfamiliar warmth spread throughout his body.
He fell in love. All over again.
The idea made him smile. It made him think how grateful he was when Ohno first stepped into his colourless gloomy life, and how much he had actually changed him.
Nino regarded Ohno with tender eyes. “Thank you Oh-chan.”
“Eh?! For what?” Ohno asked, obviously puzzled.
“For everything.” Nino smiled, a warm kind-hearted smile.
Ohno blinked innocently. “I don’t understand.” And before he could question Nino more, he found himself in Nino’s embrace for the second time that evening. But before Ohno could wrap his hands around Nino, welcoming Nino’s warmth, Nino had detached himself from him.
It was brief.
It was quick.
It was not enough.
“It’s okay.” said Nino, breaking Ohno from his reverie.
Ohno blinked.
“…usually,” Nino continued. “people will say ‘you’re welcome’ whenever someone says ‘thank you’ to them.”
Ohno blinked.
“You can try that sometimes.”
Ohno blinked again. “You’re…welcome?”
Nino laughed, the kind of laughter that makes your heart flutter and you just couldn’t help to smile fondly at it.
And smiled Ohno did.
“Why are you so obedient Oh-chan?”
Ohno didn’t answer; he was busy savoring Nino’s laughter - it was like music to his ears.
“Ahh~ I wish I could keep you,” Nino said in a perfect pitch while ruffling Ohno’s hair. “you’ll make a great pet.”
Ohno pouted with a tiny frown stuck on his forehead. “I’m not a dog.”
Nino’s laughter slowly died down. His hand fell limply to his side.
“No. No you’re not.” Nino smiled wistfully at the sulking Ohno. “you’re Ohno Satoshi.”
Then, they were silent.
Nino’s eyes looked solemn, and weren't quite fixed on Ohno anymore. And at that moment, Ohno realized how empty Nino’s eyes were.
“I got to go.” Nino said softly and smiled sullenly. “I need to leave or else-”.
“It was nice to finally meet you Oh-chan.” Nino beamed. “I need to end this.”
Taking a deep breath, Nino hesitantly said, “Goodbye.”
Nino turned his body and began to walk away. “I can do this.” Nino thought, trying to convince himself.
“I’m most definitely sure I ca-”
Nino froze as he felt a hand tugging his arm. He reluctantly turned his head to look at Ohno’s face, etched with confusion and concern.
“Nino, why-” Ohno began, but let his words hanging in the air when something stopped him to ask further - Nino’s sad and weary expression. Ohno’s heart thudded painfully at that painful sight. He wished that look would leave Nino’s pretty features. He didn’t like it one bit.
As if answering to Ohno’s wish, that painful look was gone much too quickly. Instead, Ohno’s view now filled with Nino’s smiling façade.
Ohno decided that he didn’t like that smile either.
Nino opened his mouth, trying to explain himself but Ohno was quick enough to cut him off.
“I- I promise didn’t I?!”
“Wha-”
“I promise,” Ohno boldly stated, “that I’ll send you off to your car right?!”
“Yeah, but-”
“so,” Ohno interrupted, “until then, no goodbyes…not yet.”
Nino gaped at Ohno, mouth was left open with unspoken words. He was speechless.
Ignoring Nino’s dumbfounded look, Ohno gingerly slide his hand and took Nino’s in his. Ohno was ready to move, Nino on the other hand not quite ready to make a move just yet, apparently he was still in his dazed state.
Ohno smiled understandingly, so he squeezed Nino’s hand gently, bringing him back from his trance.
Nino blinked a couple of times, taking in his surroundings. Ohno’s cherubic features came to view.
“Ikou~” he nodded, smiling sweetly at Nino as they both left the building and stepped into the coldness of the night.
***
Nino was going to be in a deep shit. That could be the only logical explanation for the fact that the warning bell inside his head had been constantly ringing non-stop since the minute they left the building.
Something wicked this way come? The voice inside his head snickered.
Fuck! Nino mentally cursed. He glanced at Ohno who seemed did not intend to let Nino’s hand go any time soon. His grip was light and gentle, yet firm at same time.
It was pleasant.
Ohno wasn’t much of a talker and seemed to be comfortable with the silence, which Nino appreciated so much. He didn’t want to say more unnecessarily idiotic things in front of Ohno. He had embarrassed himself enough already.
So, right now he’s been cautiously suppressing his true feelings from coming out. The only thing that he allowed himself to do was savoring the feeling of Ohno’s hand in his and the moment of wordless communication between them.
It was a cold night. As the cool breeze blow over them, Nino unconsciously ran his free hand over his arm, trying to warm himself, even though he was wearing a coat.
Ohno glanced at him. "You cold?"
Nino stopped rubbing his arm, pretending to look casual. "No, no. Don't worry, Oh-chan."
Ohno regarded Nino silently. Then without having a second thought he let go of Nino’s hand and wrapped his arm around Nino's waist, bringing him closer.
"You'll be a little bit warmer if we do like this." Ohno grinned at him.
Nino was lost, and had all the right in the world to blush madly like a goddamn girl.
***
[Ohno’s POV]
It was dark, but Ohno was sure Nino was blushing. “You’re so cute, Nino,” Ohno said softly, admiring the slender man in his arm. For a moment, they were just standing there on the empty street with Ohno staring into Nino’s eyes, trying to learn as much about him as he could.
Nino seemed tense. "Poor guy", Ohno thought, he must have been nervous with this situation. The guy had the right though. Two complete strangers never do this kind of things at their first meeting - they don’t hold hands nor press up against each other bodies like this. No. No one do that.
It wasn’t allowed. Ever.
Ohno wondered himself why he acted like this with Nino, to the extent of invading Nino’s personal space. We shouldn’t be like this… I shouldn’t be like this!
Yet he didn’t make any attempt to extract his arm from Nino’s waist. Instead, he pulled Nino closer to him as close as humanly possible and continued walking.
They were now in the parking lot. Only a few cars left, so one of these must be Nino’s, Ohno thought.
Nino stopped walking and turned to Ohno. “I don’t park my car here Oh-chan.” He smiled apologetically. “It’s not far from here, just around that building there” Nino pointed out.
Ohno’s heart skipped a beat. That look, that empty look appeared again in Nino’s eyes. Ohno desperately wanted that look to go away. Instinctively, Ohno took Nino’s hand again and lead him away. "Why does Nino bears that look?" "Is it his fault?" Ohno asked himself.
Something was obviously not right.
They were silence again, but Ohno felt something was different. The silence was layered with emotions that he couldn't define. He could felt it emitting from the younger man.
When they arrived to the said place Nino mentioned earlier, there was only one car left which Ohno assumed was Nino’s. So he trudged to the car with Nino followed closely behind him, who, Ohno thought was quiet, so frighteningly quiet.
“Is this your car?” Ohno asked, eyeing the car warily.
“Uh huh~” Nino answered. His voice was soft, "too soft", Ohno thought.
When Ohno turned around to face Nino, he was caught off guard when he noticed Nino staring at him.
There was a faraway look in Nino's eyes, as if he wasn't really seeing him. But then it faded to be replaced by something hard and unyielding.
“Nino?” Ohno called out, panic started to seize his whole body. And at that exact moment, Ohno just saw something ugly flickered across Nino's eyes.
Something was wrong.
“Oh-chan.” Nino said, slowly advancing towards Ohno. “I tried Oh-chan, I really did.” His voice was eerily calm.
Ohno fell silent, shivering from more than just the cold.
“But you-” Nino stopped, leaving three steps gap between them. “you making it harder for me.”
Ohno had to remind himself to breathe, keeping himself together. This was so surreal. "Where did the cute and shy Nino go?" "What happened to him?" Ohno thought with a dull feeling of horror swirling in his gut.
“You should have said goodbye,” Nino choked out. And for the barest of moments, he looked away.
Ohno swallowed thickly, he didn’t know what he supposed to do. “Nino, I’m-”
“Don’t,” Nino cut him off, “talk...please.”
Without warning, Nino launched himself towards Ohno and hit him in the ribs, hard. Sharp burst of pain engulfed Ohno’s system as his surrounding slowly became dim.
And in the midst of it, Ohno could barely hear Nino’s silent apology before he completely succumbed to the darkness.
