What is it about religion that is so divisive. Is it just me that thinks this is, like, against the whole point? Just like, I'd like to see religion bring me closer to people, not pull me farther from them.

With organized religion. I find it easier to live with a set of beliefs and ideas that are of my own creation.

You aren't wrong. Well, that's just my opinion. And I guess THAT'S what it really is about. Something that is supposed to bring people closer to each other tears them apart because of differing opinions. It's very frustrating.
