Ralph Lauren can bite my shiny ass!

Oct 07, 2009 20:53

For those who saw the title of my post, this refers to the fact that I will not buy anything from Ralph Lauren ever again.  Why?  Because not only did he and his company retouch a picture to make a models waist smaller than her head (see below):

That picture just looks nasty.

Too bad these days all pictures with people are being PhotoShopped...

Personally, I've always disliked the term "Photoshopped", because really, all professional photographs should be photoshopped (for color/tint correction and fine-tuning for effect) or remove extraneous elements (such as litter in a street scene). But when they actually distort the structure itself, that is just so inappropriate and I hope these advertisers are beginning to get a clue from the backlash that seems to be steadily growing.

One of the interesting articles I found today on that topic:
http://www.afterellen.com/blog/dorothysnarker/yet-another-photoshop-controversey-begs-the-question-can-it-be-stopped

And I guess that's why I'll never be a professional photographer; I refuse to use "PhotoShop" as I like my pictures flawed.

Woah, that pic doesn't look even REMOTELY realistic. It's like they shrunk her height AND her width, from the chest to the navel. Weird.

Not that I got much of their brand in the first place (they're not exactly plus-size friendly from the looks of it), but I agree that they made way too much of a fuss over the criticism.

Well, to be fair, I've never been RL's target audience. I've only (very) occasionally bought RL merch, usually when it was on sale at a department store and was the lowest priced quality shirt (since I think that's all I ever bought).

I definitely didn't think highly enough of RL before to go out of my way to find them (like I do Levi's). But my point was that were I to find myself in that position again, I'd buy the more expensive item, because this kind of attempt to bludgeon away our freedoms is inexcusable.
