The following is a survey I am conducting for a problem-solving class in college. It seems to me that [redacted]. If you have the time, please copy and paste the questions and post your answers to the comments of this entry, just like if you were filling out a meme. Just a note: Mentioning your hoped-for conclusion ("sewing patterns commercially available today are inadequate") before the start of the survey is really sloppy methodology. It's considered 'leading' and it'll distort your results. Before you move to solve a problem, you have to make sure there IS a problem and then make sure what the problem really is. Enough lecturing from me, though.

1.) What is your age range? (Please specify):

30 - 40

2.) How many years of sewing experience do you have?

Serious sewing, about 3 years.

3.) How often do you sew?

Two or three days out of the week for a few hours at a time.

4.) Why do you sew this frequently or infrequently?

Because that's how much is comfortable and feasible and required to get done what I want in a more or less timely fashion.

11.) Should the instructions for commercial sewing patterns be more specifically aimed at inexperienced seamstresses, and therefore use plainer language and clearer descriptions (just as a start)? Why or why not ( ... )

14.) Would you be interested in the ability to access pattern instructions on the Internet, as well as having a printed copy with your pattern? Keep in mind this would have many benefits other than allowing you access to the instructions if you lose your printed copy. Why or why not ( ... )

An off-topic note, one thing I'd love to see on the evenlopes - a designation of "Easy, intermediate, hard, wicked-stupid-dificult" This, more than any one thing, would be a grea assistance. I occasionally see this on... Butterick?

Oh yes! I think this would be a GREAT idea! Especially if they could define somewhere (like in the how-to-determine-your-size section of the pattern catalogue) exactly which skills are involved at each level.
Easy - can reliably sew straight seams, simple curves and hems. can do gathers with some guidance. works in medium weight cotton and poly-blend fabrics.
Intermediate - can reliably sew even gathers. can set in a sleeve with some guidance. works in un-napped or non-directional fabrics.

I think you're right - I've seen it somewhere, I just don't remember which pattern house.

1.) What is your age range? (Please specify):
18 - 24

2.) How many years of sewing experience do you have?
Machine sewing: 8; Hand sewing: 12

3.) How often do you sew?
On average, about once a month.

4.) Why do you sew this frequently or infrequently?
No free time. :'(

5.) Do you sew most often for yourself, or for other people?
Anymore, for other people.

6.) What do you sew the most often?
Clothes for adults, costumes, stuffed animals, and the damned quilt I've been trying to finish for a year and a half.

7.) Do you generally use commercial sewing patterns produced by companies such as Simplicity, Butterick, and McCall’s? Why or why not?
Yes. Usually only if I'm making something from scratch, and then only for adult clothing and costumes.

8.) If you have used commercial sewing patterns published by other companies (Note: Vogue is a child company of McCall’s), what did you like or not like about their pattern instructions? Why did you like or not like these things?
I don't think I've ever purchased any other commercial sewing ( ... )
