CHAPTER SEVEN

"Are you serious?"

Jensen wasn't looking at Jared, instead he was rooting through his clothes for his favorite t-shirt so that he could finish getting dressed to go out and meet Chris. He'd planned to ride out and meet up with him at the airport, have Chris follow him to the apartment. He nodded, then let out a triumphant noise when he found what he'd been searching for. When he did face Jared he saw that the other man looked slightly bemused. "What?"

"I know it's for charity and everything and it's going to be awesome, but... Selling yourself?"

Jensen rolled his eyes. "I'm not the only one, okay? There's six of us, including two of the female doctors."

"And so, what, people are bidding to take you home for the night?"

"It's not like that, Jay. Not everything's about sex. Okay, maybe in your world it is, but that's not what this is, I swear. The highest bidder gets a date with the doctor they've won. Dinner and conversation. That's all."

"What if I bid on you?"

"You might get a little more." Jensen slid his fingers beneath the edges of Jared's leather jacket, pulled him close for a kiss. "But you're not going to bid, right?"

"I promise nothing. That way I never disappoint."

"You are so frustrating."

Jared kissed the end of his nose and grinned. "I know. I work really hard at it. Give Chris a kiss from me, all right? You're coming by the bar later?"

"We'll be there. Go on. Before Rob has my ass for making you late. I'll see you soon."

Jared told him he loved him and then left, heading out to work on foot. Jensen finished getting ready and checked the time. He didn't have long, but he had long enough. He took a slow ride over to the airport, scanning the short stay parking lot for Chris's truck. It turned in after another fifteen minutes, just when Jensen was in danger of getting moved on. He didn't waste any time, just signalled to Chris to follow him and saw the nod in return. They drove out of the airport lot and continued until they got to the nearest fast food joint. Jensen pulled in and parked the bike, and Chris followed in his truck. He took his helmet and gloves off as Chris parked up a couple of slots over.

Jensen hadn't seen her, but as soon as Chris opened the door, Maya was out of the truck and racing towards him. He bent down and caught her, grinning as she licked at his face.

"Hey, puppy!" he said, fussing behind her ears. She yipped happily, twisting around his legs as he waited for Chris.

"Do I get the same treatment?" Chris asked, as he neared them.

"Ha ha, get over here you dick," Jensen said, grabbing his friend in a one-armed hug and pulling him up close. He kissed the side of Chris's face messily and laughed at his protests. "That one's from Jared," he told him.

"Yeah? What about the one from you?"

"Hmm. Later. When it's..when we're alone. You're lookin' good, man."

"You're lookin' like you don't eat enough." Chris nodded towards the restaurant they were parked outside of. "Should we maybe get something while we're here? My treat?"

"We'll grab something at home. I'm fine, I promise you. I eat enough. I think I'm just doing a lot more than I ever used to."

"Then you should eat more to make up for it."

"Yes, mom. You want to follow me back to the apartment?"

"Sure. I could really use a shower and I'm pretty sure Maya would like to be someplace the floor ain't moving."

Back at the apartment Jensen let Chris go and shower and he unpacked the box with Maya's things - her water bowl, food bowl, leash and toys. She sniffed around the apartment for a while, eventually settling into Jared's usual spot on the couch and going to sleep. She'd settle in well, Jensen thought, and Jared would be over the moon to see her again. He thought about taking her to the bar, but figured she'd probably had enough of travelling for one day. Jared might disagree, but he'd get to see her. And he doubted that any of them had any intention of going to bed early that night. Jensen was off for three days, Jared had got time off the bar, but was still working at the bike shop, so they could afford to spend a bit longer awake and talking. Or...whatever.

Jared called as Chris was getting out of the shower. Jensen answered, grinning at Chris as he came out in his towel and Maya lifted her head to watch him. "Hello?"

"Did you give him that kiss yet?"

"I gave him a kiss. Do you have cameras in here or something?"

"Wouldn't you like to know? How long will you guys be?"

"Chris just got out of the shower, so maybe another half hour."

"Is Maya okay?"

"She's fine. Curled up on your end of the couch, fast asleep."

"She's missed me, huh?"

"I guess so. We'll leave her here. You can cuddle her later."

"All right." Jared sounded a little disappointed, but he didn't argue. "So, Chris just got out of the shower, huh?"

"Yup."

"Naked?"

"He has a towel on." The words made Chris look up at him, from where he was rooting through his bag for a change of clothes. "Other than that, yeah." Chris smirked at him and flicked the knot of the towel, let it drop. "Oh, wait, scratch that. He's completely naked now."

"Yeah? I think maybe you guys should make out and let me listen."

"I think you're a fucking pervert."

"You love it. Just don't get him too excited, right? I don't want you wasting all that energy before I get a go."

"He's coming over here, Jay. I think he might..." Jensen trailed off as Chris leant over him, a hand on the cushion behind his head, and pressed their mouths together. Jensen moaned, sliding his tongue into Chris's mouth, and they kissed like that for half a minute before Chris released him and straightened again. "Fuck, Jared..."

"You get that boy over here as soon as you can. I want to see you both."

The Blue was packed out as usual, noisier than ever, and there was live music at one end of the bar. Thankfully it was the opposite end to where Jensen and Chris both stood, having snagged an empty spot at the bar before anyone else could take it so they at least had somewhere to put their drinks. Jared was busy behind the bar, fulfilling orders, and had barely had time to kiss Jensen hello before he was called back to work. Jensen knew that once his shift ended they'd have his full attention, so he didn't mind too much. It gave him a chance to catch up with Chris, after all. They spoke on the phone every week, but this was better. Chris told him how Johnny was doing in school, everything that Lynn had been up to, about the days out they'd had as a family when he'd taken a week off from his job.

Chris loved working for himself, he said, since it gave him the opportunity to decide when to take time off. He had a big job coming up in the new year, though, which would mean that he could have an even bigger break when it was done. They made plans to see each other again then, and then talked about the next few days. They'd do karaoke on Chris's last night, since The Blue was hosting an evening of it and there were cash prizes, which Jared had felt sure Jensen and Chris could easily win. The following night, though, was the bicentennial event at the hospital when Jensen would be auctioned off for charity. There were other fund-raisers going on throughout the evening and he knew Jared was looking forward to it more than he let on.

They listened to the band for a while, until a yawn from Chris made them both realize that it was nearing 1am. Jensen looked across to where Jared was still working hard and waited until he was free before calling his name. He came over and smiled at them apologetically.

"Sorry, guys, you picked a busy night."

"Yeah, sure. I want one for the road and then we're leaving," Jensen told him, reaching across the bar and taking hold of the front of Jared's shirt. He pulled him across and they kissed over the bar counter. "We'll see you soon?" he asked, as he moved back again.

"I'll try not to be too long. What can I get you?"

Jensen smiled. "That was all I wanted."

Jared got home at just after two in the morning, and Jensen laughed as Maya scrabbled off the couch so fast to greet him that she almost overtook herself and skidded across the floor. Jared dropped into a crouch in seconds, catching her in his arms and tilting his head back as she licked at his chin and neck. He hugged her tightly, fussed and cooed at her, and she lapped it up.

"Good to see somebody's pleased to see me," he said, as he finally straightened up and looked at the two men in the living room.

Jensen shook his head, waving a hand at their dog. "Like we were going to try and compete with her for your attention."

"You don't have to compete. I'll be right with you." Jared headed for the bedroom and a couple of minutes later he was back in the doorway, wearing underwear and a smile. "You guys coming or what?"

It was different here, Jensen thought, as the three of them found a comfortable position in the bed. Chris was caught between the two of them, his head resting back against Jared's shoulder as Jensen kissed them both in turn. Jared was already stroking a hand down his body, sliding a hand underneath his shorts.

"How much fun did Lynn say you could have?" he asked, tugging at the short hairs there with pinched fingers. Chris shuddered.

"She's good with third base," he replied.

Jared let out a quiet laugh and squeezed Chris's dick hard at those words. "Third base we can do." He moved his arm up again, trapping Chris to his body, and Jensen was the one who shifted himself down, tugged Chris's underwear down around his thighs. He formed a kiss around the tip of Chris's dick, holding it steady as he slipped his mouth down over it. He twisted his hand as he sucked upward and Chris moaned at the touch. Jared made him tip his head back so he could reach to kiss him while Jensen worked his cock. Neither of them knew what Lynn enjoyed with Chris in the bedroom - it was the sort of thing they didn't ask - but it seemed like it had been a while since he'd had this because he was quick to let go.

He was gasping out apologies as Jared released his mouth, but they both told him to shut up.

"But-"

"Chris," Jensen insisted. "We got all night. Don't worry about it."

"You nervous?"

Jensen looked in the mirror at Jared and nodded. "A bit," he admitted. "This is the first big thing I'm going to do for the hospital. The kind of thing I want to go right, y'know?"

"It will go right. I mean, look. You got me in a monkey suit."

Jensen grinned, looking Jared's reflection up and down. "It looks good on you."

Jared was dressed all in dark colors - black pants and jacket, charcoal gray shirt - and his hair was combed neatly back behind his ears. Jensen was in scrubs, since there was some kind of parade onstage before the auction began and all of the doctors taking part had been asked to come in their usual work attire. Jared hooked a thumb under the elastic of his scrubs pants then and pulled him back away from the mirror for a moment.

"They're not gonna ask you to do a striptease, are they?"

"I promise that if anything comes off, it'll only be my shirt."

"And where are our seats again? I think I should be front row for that."

"You'll be close enough. Let me finish getting ready, huh? We need to go soon."

"Can't help it if the sight of you in scrubs just makes me want to bend you over the nearest available surface and fuck you until you can't walk. Can I?"

"Yeah, well, you can try. At least until it's all over." Jensen turned and gave him a quick kiss, then went back to shaving. "Go on. Go keep Chris company. I'll be right out and then we're leaving."

He didn't take long to get finished up, pulling his scrubs top on and pinning his namebadge to it. They took Chris's truck to the hospital and parked in Jensen's spot, since it was easier than taking the bikes. Besides that, Jared had mentioned seeing that rental car again and they were both wary about keeping their bikes secure, convinced that whoever it was might notice them more if they were on them. Next door to the hospital was a private building where they held functions such as tonight's and that was where Jensen led them now. It was already busy, and he saw a lot of people he knew and smiled and waved at them. There were a couple of people missing that he'd hoped would be here so Chris could meet them, but they were staying with his patients and he was happy that there was someone he could trust with them.

A band was onstage playing - a lot less rowdy than the music at The Blue - and there were waitresses side-stepping around guests with trays of food and champagne. Jared snagged two glasses as one came past him and handed one each to Chris and Jensen.

"You're not drinking?" Jensen wanted to know.

Jared eyed him. "Champagne ain't exactly drinking, man. There's a bar over there. I'm getting a beer." He patted Jensen on the shoulder and left them to it, making a beeline for the bar.

"What time's the auction?" Chris asked.

"Another hour. You want to mingle while Jared gets his drink on?"

His friend laughed, put his arm around Jensen's shoulders. "Awesome. Let's mingle."

Jared found them about five minutes before Jensen was due to be pulled up on stage. Jensen had been worried that he'd find the whole thing boring, or stick with them all night and not talk to anyone. His fears had been unfounded though. Jared updated them on the last hour of his night and they discovered that he'd somehow found the only other three people here who owned a motorcycle and given them the card for Memo's place. Told them to ask for him and he could fix them up.

"Are you looking at starting up your own place or something?" Chris asked.

"Memo knows I am. I want my own shop someday. No bar work, just bikes and cars, all day. Custom work a specialty. That's my dream, baby," Jared told him, grabbing him and pulling him in close. "And what else do people come to La-la land for?"

"Well, I know you'll make it. Now, we need to find our table and let Jen here go parade himself to the potential buyers."

Jensen smiled at them both as he headed to where the other hospital staff taking part were already waiting. It covered up how nervous he was about it, he hoped. They were each given a red rose before they stepped onto the stage and lined up, to much cheering and whistling from the crowd. A surgeon, Doctor Platt, introduced the auction and asked each of them to step forward and tell people a bit about themselves. Jensen had been thinking of something to make himself sound interesting and, well, expensive, all week, but he didn't even open his mouth before the people there were stamping and cheering for him. There was an ear-splitting wolf-whistle and he knew without looking that it had come from Jared.

"Hi. I'm Doctor Ackles and I think you should bid for me because I've been told by my patients that I have an amazing bedside manner." He gave his best smile as he stepped back, amidst even more whistling and screaming. He was laughing as much as his fellow 'lots' by the time they'd all taken their turn. People were getting into this a lot more than he'd thought they would, and there had already been several shouts of 'strip, strip!', none of which came from Jared.

Jensen was last up for bidding and it seemed there were at least five people waiting just for him. Bids had started at $50 for the other guys, and had gone up to nearly $500 in one case. But for Jensen, Platt already had a bid in his hand, written on a napkin, and he smirked at Jensen as he read it out.

"Doctor Ackles, one night, $200 opening bid." He looked up. "Do I hear two-fifty in the room?"

"If he takes his shirt off!" someone yelled, from halfway back the room. Jensen looked, trying to see, and then the owner of the voice stood up and his eyes widened. She looked about 70 and wore a dress that was maybe a little too short to be decent and covered in sequins. She looked like a walking disco ball.

"Jensen?" Platt asked, turning to look at him with a raised eyebrow. Jensen shrugged and slowly took off his scrubs shirt, turned around in a full circle and held his arms out to the side. The old lady nodded.

"Three hundred," she called.

"Jesus, did you see her? She would have eaten you alive, man. She must've been the same age as my grandma."

Jensen laughed, shuddering. "That was a lucky escape, thanks to you guys. You can afford this, right?"

"It's for charity, of course we can," Chris told him. "Jen, don't worry about it."

The three of them were heading for Jensen's office, where he had a change of clothes waiting for him before they headed home. He was still in his scrubs and he wanted to get into warm jeans and a hoodie before they went home. He had barely set foot out of the elevator when one of the nurses from his floor, Barbie, was there, and he knew without even asking that something was wrong. He didn't even hear Jared or Chris speaking to him, calling after him as he ran down the corridor, sneakers pounding on the floor, echoing in the near-silence of the hospital at night.

He stopped in the doorway of the room he needed, stared in at the small crowd of doctors and nurses around her bed. Sam Wright was there and she saw him in the doorway and looked away, but not before he saw she'd been crying. He heard someone state the time of death and his own heart seemed to stop in that moment. He moved towards the bed, towards the young girl in the bed who would now never get the change to not be young. Ally looked as though she was smiling, and that was too much for Jensen. Sam stepped out of the way for him and he felt her hand slip into his as he reached out with the other to stroke Ally's hair back.

"I'm so sorry, Jensen."

He nodded, and Sam squeezed his fingers and let go. "I'll go and tell the parents."

"No," he said, stopping her. "No, I should do it. She was my patient."

"You're sure? I don't-"

"Let me?"

He didn't see anyone on his way to the private waiting room, supposed that Jared and Chris had gone to his office to wait. He found Ally's parents there, both already pale with fear for their daughter.

He'd practiced this, but it had never been as hard as the reality of it as he told them that their daughter was gone. A nurse came in after several minutes, with hot drinks, but they couldn't say anything to her, too numb to even register her presence. The drinks went untouched as Jensen tried to comfort them and asked if they wanted to see her. He followed them to Ally's room, hung back as they approached their daughter, hands at their mouths and barely able to stand.

Ally's mother leaned against the bed for support, sobbing. Her father looked everywhere but at his daughter's colorless face. He seemed to notice something then, reached out and took whatever it was from its position hanging at the head of her bed. It was the pendant Jensen had given her not so long ago. The man turned to Jensen, seeming unsurprised that he was still there.

"She talked about you a lot," he said, very quietly. "I think you should have this back." He didn't give Jensen a choice, just pressed it into his hand and let go. "Thank you, doctor."

For what? he wanted to ask. She's dead, what do you have to be thankful for? But he kept quiet and moved back towards the door. He wound the cord of the necklace around his wrist until it was tight, pressed the clasp shut. He needed to get out of there. He needed to leave them to mourn alone and not add his own grief to theirs.

Jared and Chris were indeed in his office when he got there and neither of them said a word as he came in, seeing from the look on his face what kind of a state he was in. Jared just got up, opening his arms for Jensen to step into. He did so gladly.

"What happened?" Chris asked, finally breaking the silence.

Jared fingered the necklace around Jensen's wrist, remembered how pleased he'd been to find it. He didn't need to ask. He already knew.

"Jensen, I'm sorry," he whispered, holding him as tight as he could. Jensen's tears spread damply through his shirt, warming his skin. He said nothing, didn't think he could, just wept in Jared's arms.
