I was all about seeing Avatar until Monday, when I saw the full-length movie--I mean, trailer... Now it just looks like one of those touchy, do-goodery, lets hug and make out and share our land with one another type flicks that doesn't have enough scary distopian violence to make up for all the sap.
and weirdo directors doing kids pieces is the new big thing (see: the dude who did the harry potter movies who also did those weird spanish dramas like "y tu tambien.")

Yeah that was my response to Avatar, too. Like the first time I saw the trailor the sound was off, and I was like, huh, special effects, blue people, explosions...this looks pretty tight. Then I saw it with sound and said, "Wait a minute, wait a minute...I've seen this before, yes I've seen it...FERNGULLY! Yeah. Already done. Nice try though. Very original title as well." At least it's got that chick from Lost in it.
I did not know about Harry Potter dude, though. That is very interesting.
"Lady in the Water" was supposed to be a children's story, so maybe that's the connection? I think he also has a bunch of kid flick/tv show writting credits, too.
Either way, I've enjoyed his films...I know others don't, but I have.
EDIT: I have yet to see "The Happening"...so I can't really speak to that.
Yeah, I have, too. I haven't seen too many of them, but I love his WHAT THE HELL plot twists and ability to build suspense and surpirse, and on top of it, he's a really good director. Like, say what you must about Mel Gibson being an asshole (he is), he *nailed* that part in Signs, and I doubt many other directors could have captured that character quite so well.
So in that way, I'm like, I really, sort of, in a way, MUST see what he does with this TV show.
I never found M. Night Shamylan scarry. Am I odd in this? His (her?) work is so farytale driven it kind of makes sense to be making a kids film. Most of his work would make a better book than a movie e.i. Lady in the water. They totally skimped on the special effects making it hokey at the end when they could have either made it sound and reaction only or gone for a bigger budget.
Anyway... I'm possitive the two movies have nothing to do with each other, other than coincidence. Agreed that it looks cliched but the special effects are the shit!
