I, too, am on the cell phone shopping hunt. My current phone is on its last legs and has exploded many times from being dropped. My battlefield surgery has always managed to patch it up and send it back into the fray; but its days are numbered and few, i'm afraid.
I enjoy having a cell phone, tho, and don't harbor the same issues you seem to have. Texting is handy when you don't want/can't talk to somebody; and if you don't want to talk to ppl-- silent! I'd like the internet like you say-- it's handy; but i can't afford to be that fancy!
Yeah, I have a real phobia about cells. I think it has to do with my sense of privacy, that I really prefer to be alone most of the time. Cell phones chip away at that because now others expect me to keep it on all the time and be available for SOME manner of communication. The upside to getting a Blackberry is that my geekiness is somewhat appeased by the tech of the handheld. I've been downloading free apps and tweaking the settings since I got it.
