Il tempo è venuto quando l'altro 3 fondatori e Slytherin erano incapace per decidere sugli studenti che dovrebbe andare alla scuola. È stato creduto da Slytherin, ciò soltanto i bambini dalle famiglie di tutto magia dovrebbero andare alla scuola. Incapace per venire a un accordo, Slytherin lasciato la scuola.

Hogwarts ha avuto quattro membri fondanti; Rowena Ravenclaw, Helga Hufflepuff, Godric Gryffindor e Salazar Slytherin. Questi fondatori hanno stabilito la struttura della casa che è ancora in uso oggi e le case sono chiamate dopo loro. Ogni casa richiede determinate qualità nei relativi allievi ed il cappello di fascicolazione è stato affascinato da Gryffindor per trovare questi nelle nuove iscrizioni e per disporlo di conseguenza.
