I'm trying to figure out what kind of job would support the kind of lifestyle I want. So first, I tried making a list of what I need, want, and fancy. If you notice something missing from the "need" section...heh. Oops!

Re: basics. Most if not all basics (other than bedding et al) can be gotten 2nd hand. That's a savings. Beds never ever EVER get 2nd or used. Period. Crockery etc can be gotten 2nd hand and replaced at need. I moved away with a tea kettle, 1 pot and 1 pan a plate, bowl and 1 each knife, spoon & fork. The apt. I rented had oven/stove, sink, shower stall and that's it. It depends on where you live I guess ( ... )

About the unemployment thing, I was going from what I read in one finance book--which recommended, depending on what exactly your job was/how likely you were to find work again, either 3, 6, or 12 months. I don't know exactly what my job will be yet, but I figured it was safest to go with the longer range. I know it could possibly be longer, but I also figure it's also impossible to prepare for absolutely everything--and if we're talking only five-six years down the road, I doubt I'd be able to have much more saved up.

And yes, I realize all the entertainment's going to have to go. My stepdad was stressed out when he was unemployed; he was always up and around, either doing small jobs for some cash or looking for places to apply.

I actually have most of my bedding already...pretty much all I'd need is the mattress. (well...is the frame actualy important, or is it just to look nice? XD I honestly don't know.)

Most mattresses come with the basic metal frame with or without wheels. A bed set, like headboard/footboard is extra can be expensive. I slept for 50+ years on a bed without bedhead and did just fine. :)

Mattresses btw are an investment. They are not cheap (Never buy a cheap mattress you'll hate yourself) But they last from 5 , 10, even 15 years depending on quality. So, that's not bad.

Odd jobs, part time work, even temp work is a god send when looking for full time stuff. One just has to tuck one's pride into one's belt and deal with the shit, because those kind of jobs are horrible. but they help pay bills and show the person is willing and able to work. Looks good on resumes. I know your dad was going buggy. I remember. I just went thru that whole thing myself a few years back: was unemployed for a year and I did anything ANYthing to keep working. Altho the last 6 months was bone dry. That was economics of the area tho and nothing i could do.
