Last term, avani and I did some work on a graph-based visualization for structure in program logs. It was rejected from DSN. I was planning to revise and resubmit to WASL, the workshop on analysis of system logs. Unfortunately, there is no WASL. It's been folded in with SysML into something called SLAM. Q: Is there anybody who reads this journal who is not also friends with me on Facebook or Twitter? I've noticed that short "life updates" tend to be on one of those two sites, rather than here. They don't make LJ totally redundant -- this is still a better format for longish pieces of writing where I want to get the attention of a handful of ( Read more... ) -

UCOP has provided a short-fuse deadline to submit proposals for professional development fees (PDF) to the campus and then systemwide. Once again spent Thanksgiving down in Los Altos with the vkrafft family. Enjoyed it, as always. Though next year I think I should head East and see the family. In the past, passover was the big family gathering. That probably won't be true this year, so I should make the effort for Thanksgiving.

protests, pt 3
The craziness continues. Students have been occupying Wheeler Hall, the English Department building, all day, and have barricaded themselves on the second floor. Large crowd around the building (500+ people I think). Earlier today, UC called in the sheriff's deputies to help control crowds and handle arrestees ( Read more... ) -

there's a crowd of 200 people in front of California Hall, piling up garbage in front of the front door talking about how they're going to stay here blocking in the chancellor until their demands are met. more biking
Rode to Berkeley Marina and back with relsqui. This was originally going to be on behalf of Berkeley Hillel, and so I invested in about $15 worth of bagels and bagel products. But nobody came, so I gave up after 20 minutes, and froze the bagels. Then realized it was still a pretty afternoon, and I still wanted to go riding, so poked relsqui, and went anyway ( Read more... ) -

Talked to Randy. He thought my latest draft was basically MS-worthy. But just to be on the safe side, I reformatted it, and added some implementation notes in an appendix. I think I'll show it to Anthony tomorrow.
Soon I will be a master of science.
